Lesson 5.9 Peer Mental Health Navigators as Agents of Change

An agent of change is someone who sees a problem in their community, large or small, and does something to act for substantial change. An agent of change has the courage to think outside the box and makes an impact that is greater than themself.

5 Qualities All Effective Change Agents Have

  • Flexibility. Being open to change requires an entrepreneurial attitude. 
  • Diversified Knowledge. Successful leaders avoid getting stuck in the confines of their industry. 
  • Prioritization. Being able to adapt to situational changes.
  • Accountability and Responsibility. Taking responsibility for actions.
  • Effective Listening Skills. Being there fully in conversations and practicing empathy.

How to Become an Agent of Change

  • Know your power. Your voice is valuable and influential.
  • Engage peers and build a network. Social change takes time and teamwork. You can bring friends along, ask for help, and inspire others to get involved.
  • Partner with supportive people. You can also build relationships with trusted people for support.
  • Connect with community. It’s important to discover resources in your community.
  • Seek out resources. No one has all of the answers, but we don’t have to look far to find great resources.
  • Vote. If you are able, voting is one of the most important and powerful ways to  create change at a local and systems level.
