Mental Health Matters WA (MHM) hosts community events that raise public awareness about mental health and help to break the social stigma about mental health and illness. These events will apply an arts based approach and involve other community partners. Language interpreters and childcare (for on-site events) are provided.

Introduction to LGBTQ+ Communities / Introducción a las Comunidades LGBTQ+

Aan educational talk to get to know the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. Join us with an open mind to learn about issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity, and how to foster understanding, inclusivity, and allyship in our families and communities.

Presenter: Shakira Cruz Roman, MHT
Shakira who uses they and she pronouns, has more than 15 years of experience as an activist, educator, therapist, and advocate for LGBTQ+ people. In their work as a mental health therapist, as well as in educational projects, Shakira works to amplify the voices of marginalized people, and promote diversity and inclusion in our communities. With a master’s degree in Social Work, and a focus on the intersections of mental health and physical health, Shakira seeks to support groups and individuals in improving their health and well-being.
This event will be transmitted in English with a live Spanish track.
